Signs Your Dryer Needs a Professional

Not sure if it's worth a call? These are the signs our technicians hear about most before a repair.

  • Clothes come out damp or take two or more cycles to dry
  • Drum won't turn even though the motor is running
  • Dryer is hot to the touch on the outside, or overheating
  • Loud thumping, squealing, or grinding during the cycle
  • Burning smell, or noticeably less airflow from the vent
  • Won't start, keeps tripping the breaker, or shuts off mid-cycle

Common Dryer Problems

Whatever's going on, our technicians have likely already fixed one just like it.

Not Heating

Drum turns and tumbles but the air coming out stays cool.

Drum Won't Turn

Motor runs or hums, but the drum stays still or spins freely.

Poor Airflow / Long Dry Times

Weak exhaust airflow leaves clothes damp and cycles running long.

Loud or Unusual Noise

Thumping, squealing, or grinding from the drum, belt, or bearings.

Won't Start or Shuts Off

No power, stops mid-cycle, or the door switch won't engage.

Overheating

Dryer or clothes running hotter than normal, a fire safety concern.

Technician's Take

If cycles are taking longer and longer to dry a load, check the exhaust vent before assuming it's the heating element. A clogged or crushed vent run restricts airflow, trips the thermal safety fuse, and can mimic a heating problem — I clear one of these on close to half the "won't dry" calls I run.

Dryer Repair FAQ

This is most often a heating element, thermal fuse, or a restricted exhaust vent limiting airflow. A technician can quickly narrow down which one it is and whether the vent run needs to be cleared.
Yes — a hot dryer exterior, a burning smell, or repeated overheating are fire-risk signs. Unplug the dryer and stop using it until it's inspected rather than running additional cycles.
Cost depends on the part and labor involved. We charge a diagnostic fee for the visit, which is applied toward the repair if you move forward with the recommended fix.
Yes, our technicians service gas and electric dryers, including stackable and front-load units, across all major brands.
